We volunteer. We all do in some capacity I think. I'd like to think.
It is good for the soul. And for me, if the right of passage involves effort, sweat, and a little discomfort, well heck count me in. Tossed a large mound of mulch today with new friends. Three some hours in the balmy heat. But good times. Watchin people saunter in, out of the Market. It is good to work. Feels good to just work.
And all for my community. You know the house thing, the project, is somewhat for the community but at the end of the day, I should get paid. I could move on. Got my money, later. But Soulard should get more than that. It should get my best on all fronts. If I can use my gift for work, for toil and help make my new community better, more attractive, I say again count me in.
And what is a community? Buildings for sure. People and establishments. Things architects ponder at night. Things developers market when selling, like, New Town. But community lives inside you. It does or it does not.
I fit in Soulard for many reasons. But the subtle, but most important I believe is the community aspect. I am comfortable here. I fit. I can ride my beach bike given graciously and lovingly from a friend. I look a little goofy. I like that. People here are goofy. But good hearted. Good natured. Well intentioned.
So, next weekend. You want to find me? I am the guy tossing mulch, again. I am smiling. I am tired and dirty. And I am happy.
