I had fogotten how much I enjoy design work. When I worked white collar, it was a part of my daily duties. There were innumerable choices and decisions to make that were detail-oriented but directly related to the way customers would interface with the machine: button styles and function, grip and form profiles, price targets and manufacture related compatibility. Dull to discuss but exciting to toy with especially at 3am when most good design work gets done. The office cube with it's nappy blue carpeted walls and dust bunnies becomes a nest of creation when the nasty leftover coffee and Dolly Madison doughnuts kick in. The AM station, tejano music blaring from the cleaning staffs' carts mixing with mp3 rock and roll spilling from the computer speakers was a fitting environment to just let ideas flow.
With the edging-in of winter here in the StL, the time to build the garage is here. I was hesitant to take this on for a long time. It is a sizable chunk of money and in most cases a dollar into a garage does not equate to a dollar on the sale of the property. StL life, though, dictates a demand for a secure place for your car, ladder, mower...basically anything that could be taken to the pawn shop; car windows are a common target for that purse or briefcase left on a seat. The price-point and the level of finish on 1837 So. 10th St is premium. Not having a garage would be a major detractor especially for clients considering a move from the County. Maslov's hiearchy kicks in for County folks considering a move into the city regardless of which neighborhood they are considering. DANGER DANGER DANGER Will Robinson!
So as I sketch out the garage and start to add the details, I am getting really excited about building it. If I could start tomorrow, I would. Brick verneer, transom french doors, parapet style roof line, the garage is going to look great and harken to the flats that once occupied that square of land; where immigrant families once huddled and scraped by, two cars and a lawnmower will now reside. Times have changed indeed.
Keep an eye out for new pics in the coming weeks. There is much happening. The garage will be another great example of the care and attention to detail I am hoping the buyer will appreciate...and be willing to pay for.
Cheers, Dean
